Be Yours & Have the BEST Valentine's Day of your life!

Be Yours & Have the BEST Valentine's Day of your life!

I’ve been on every end of Valentine’s Day – in love, in unrequited love, broken-hearted, single & sexy, single & lonely and performing in a restaurant filled with couples trying desperately to have the most romantic evening of their lives. And collecting the cumulative experiences into one well-rounded observation, I conclude that there is one definitive attitude to have on Valentine’s Day. Be Yours.

Decide right now, no matter what your current relationship status is, that you will first and foremost ‘Be Your Valentine’ on February 14th. I will bet my bottom dollar (and I don’t like betting that), this mindset will change this holiday forever. And for the better.

Most of us believe that Valentine’s Day is or should be all about love. But we have been told through movies, commercials, fairy tales, aisles at the grocery store and so on…what this love should look like. Love looks like: chocolate, teddy bears, flowers, jewelry and lingerie, et al. For better or worse (mostly worse), these messages are deeply embedded into our psyche (btw, Psyche is the Greek Goddess of the soul). Because we believe these fantasies to be reality, we are deeply disappointed when our honey doesn’t show their love in exactly the way we romanticized. And it starts to get into tricky territory when you start telling your sweetheart what you want…or expect on Valentine’s Day.

Whether you have a partner or are a sexy single this Valentine’s Day, Be Yours. Treat yourself exactly how you have always romanticized. Do what you always wanted to do on this holiday: pack a picnic, go for a drive or take a candlelight bath. But do it solo. The idea is to give yourself the present you dreamt about receiving. You can still enjoy sharing the day or night with your sweetheart. No one even needs to know and your honey will reap the benefits!

I pride myself in not being a traditional girl, but I must confess: I have always wanted to receive a heart necklace as a gift on Valentine’s Day. Last year, I bought myself one. For those of you who think that it means more if it comes from someone else, you couldn’t be more wrong. It was only $39.99, but the value of the joy that it brought me was worth a billion. Over the years, I have received some truly opulent, expensive and sentimental gifts. But nothing compares to the feeling of when touch my fingers to the little charm dangling around my neck and I am reminded that I gave myself what no one else could give me: I chose me.

Due to the requests: here is where to order the necklace I mentioned and pictured to the right.  Click here to order.

My birthday is 2 days after, so I've never gotten any presents for Valentines day. My husband always gets me a cute little card though.
It's not about expecting presents. You can tell anyone you love them. Especially yourself!
Great post Dolphina!

This is such a great blog! I have definitely fallen into the trap or over romanticizing what I expect on Valentine's Day, and no one can live up to that hype, unless they are psychic! My husband always does something super sweet, but this year I'm treating myself to an amazing spa treatment, a gift I've always wanted!! Thanks for reminding me that we are our own best Valentine :)
