Fasten your seatbelts; it’s going be a bumpy ride from February 23–March 17. Mercury will be going into retrograde starting last Saturday, taking us for a wild ride for the next three weeks. Be prepared to get lost, run out of gas, arrive at your appointment late, spill coffee on your favorite skirt, misplace your files, fight with your boyfriend and leave with a parking ticket. Sound like oodles of fun? It’s unfortunate that you cannot stop Mercury from going retrograde, but there are some tricks to help you survive during this time and possibly even learn some things!
Dare you ask, what does Mercury in retrograde mean?
Mercury is not actually moving backwards; it's just that we see it this way from Earth, because of the combined movement of the Earth and Mercury around the Sun.
All the planets affect Earth. The Moon uses make the oceans ebb and flow twice a day! There’s no doubt that the Moon influences us, too, which is why we attribute craziness and wild behavior during a Full Moon with the term: lunatic (lunar is the astronomical name for Earth’s Moon).
Mercury is the closet planet to the Sun and it affects us greatly. Mercury is considered the planet of communication and its energies involve the mind, mental processes, communication, travel, speaking and writing.
The retrograde symbol is "Rx", the same symbol on all medical prescriptions! The connection between science, medicine and astronomy is deep and ancient. Physicians until the 15th century had to also be astrologers before they could practice medicine.
When Mercury is in retrograde all the aspects that it governs will “go backwards”, too.
Huh? What happens Mercury goes retrograde?
All sorts of things! It’s like everyone you know has suddenly gone mad! You might find yourself getting into bizarre arguments about nothing at all, babbling like an idiot or barely even able to form a coherent thought. Computer and other electronic equipment malfunctions are notorious during Mercury retrograde. We don’t tend to get all the information we need at this time, so it can be hard to make big decisions and it’s not a good time to sign a contract, either.
I’m scared! How will I survive?
I know it sounds frightening, but no time is completely bad for anything, there is a reason everything happens.
The key is the reversed direction of movement: take any known Mercurian action, and reverse its flow. Consider the keywords “re-evaluate”, "re-doing something", "double-checking", "finish the old projects" and there you are, you've found the good side of Mercury retrograde.
This is an excellent time to work on old projects that never got to be finished. So, think about the things you started and never finalized. Maybe that door just needs another lick of paint or you’ll decide to finally put away your ex-boyfriend’s love letters.
Mercury retrograde is providing us with a chance to re-examine various areas of our life that may need a little more work, so that we can move forward to a bright new dawn. Now, more than ever, the time is right to look at things with clear eyes. Delicious, fresh perspectives are revealed. We often have major breakthroughs—intellectual, emotional or spiritual—during this time.
Next, you might wish to prevent any bad things to happen to you: so double-check your agenda, call your business partners to confirm that everything goes as planned, have everything ready before the deadline and leave some extra time for unexpected events. Make copies of your important files and documents, save your work more often.
This, too, shall pass
Keep in mind that the planets will keep rotating around the sun and just as EVERYTHING does: this, too, shall pass. One of the best ways to cope - as with anything, really - is to just “go with the flow”. When you fight Mercury retrograde, that’s when life gets really ugly. Just take some time, go slowly, be careful and don’t freak yourself out by expecting to be uber-productive-perfect right now. Above all, be generous and compassionate with everyone, especially yourself!
