We all need inspiration from time to time - especially on Mondays! I am a major quote nerd and love to underline all my books and post them on my refrigerator, mirrors and facebook, I select a special quote each Monday.
The most life-altering book I have ever read is "Walden" by Henry David Thoreau. It inspired me to live off the land for a year in the Caribbean, in a treehouse, where I was rescued by dolphins. Thoreau's radical & pacifist philosophy led him to his arrest and subsequent being jailed because he did not want to support a government that supported slavery. This experience inspired his famous essay "On the Duty of Civil Disobedience". This writing was the inspiration of both Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I could write volumes of his brilliance, but I will stop here.
I had the honor to visit today to visit Walden Pond where he lived off the land for 2 years. Walden is a book about his experiences and observations he had whilst he lived there. Selecting one quote from this feast of inspirational sentences is extremely difficult. Not to mention, an overwhelming feeling that I am not giving Thoreau proper justice.
"An individual's first duty is to live his life as his principles demand." - Henry David Thoreau
