There have been very few things that have profoundly changed the quality of my life like the above sentences. They sound so simple, but when I actually made them a part of my everyday routine, everything about my life changed for the better!
Please allow me to explain my situation: my mornings used to be a first rate horror show. I’ve been a bellydancer almost my entire life and late nights are one of the hazards of the job (in Egypt, the best dancers perform at 5 am!). Naturally, it would be difficult to sleep once I got home and most nights would find me up reading, writing, eating and other pleasurable things. I would just be getting to sleep when everyone was beginning his or her day – for those of you who work late shifts and odd hours; you know what I’m talking about. The raw food restaurant I lived above could care less that I was up late…or a Goddess for that matter. They would start blending vegetables a mere 2 hours after my head hit the pillow and I would start my day feeling irritable. Even when I moved to a quieter home, my mornings had no positive ritual and I awakened feeling cranky.
But then I read that how you start your day affects your whole life, and I decided to give investigate further. I put on my Nancy Drew outfit (light blue sweater, pencil skirt) and I researched morning rituals. I asked radiant people how they began their mornings and read about how successful people started their days. I wrote down all my ideas and intentions. What I came up with is what I called Goddess Morning Minutes – which eventually became Goddess M&Ms (I like candy!). I prescribed myself the following:
Rx For the next 30 days, take the first 5-10 minutes in the morning completely to myself*
The activity I choose must do one of the following things:
- Remind me that I am capable of anything
- Give me serenity and peace
- Become my favorite part of the day
- Inspire me
- Heal me
- Restore me
*“Completely to myself” is literal--No one else. Also, it does NOT include reading/answering emails, surfing the internet or cleaning out the kitty litter. If for any reason I have some early responsibility that I must do or I am not at my home, I will get up 10 minutes earlier and do my Goddess morning minutes outside, in the garage or anywhere that I can be alone.
After doing this for 30 days, my life completely changed for the better! I wasn’t grouchy. I felt more peaceful. I treated myself kinder (and others, too!). I felt more inspired, focused and motivated. I was being more productive while also enjoying my time with friends. I could even shimmy better! The mornings were affecting my entire day. I was loving my life!
I have done many different things over the years during my Goddess M&M’s, tailoring them to certain occasions.
Here is my list of Goddess M&Ms:
- Take a walk (especially when I am traveling!)
- Write in a gratitude journal
- Dance – no rehearsing, just for fun & joy
- Stretch – simply because it feels good
- Read an inspiring quote or affirmations
- Make a corner of the house my “morning minutes” and fill it with beautiful, tranquil, inspiring things and sit quietly, breathing, in my special spot in the morning
- Make a fun music playlist – (I have several) One that is soft and dreamy, one that’s upbeat, etc. I even programmed this so it would wake me up. This is also great to disguise those horrible noises.
- Write – stream of consciousness, dreams, thoughts – in other words: not for work
- Pampering beauty treatment (a quick one like a face mask)
- Meditate or just be still in my garden
- Read – this book has to be a special, inspirational type book that I have pre-selected and limit to reading only during my morning Goddess minutes and this makes it special.
- Watch a video – like a TED Talk or cute animal youtube video (but something that I have already watched or predetermined that it is inspiring)
- Make a warm cup of tea
- Look at fashion, décor pics – as long as they nourish me with their beauty and don’t make me feel lacking or longing for something
If you are finding yourself thinking that this is just impossible for you because you have too many responsibilities, its too new age or just won’t make a big difference in your life, please allow me to add another great reason to try it: Many great people throughout history share a similar philosophy about starting their day:
Steve Jobs famously said, “I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.”
Ghandi began his day with this prayer, “Let the first act of every morning be to make the following resolve for the day: I shall not fear anyone on Earth. I shall fear only God. I shall not bear ill will toward anyone. I shall not submit to injustice from anyone. I shall conquer untruth by truth. And in resisting untruth, I shall put up with all suffering.”
“The period between four and six in the morning is called the Brahmamuhurta, the Brahmic time, or divine period, and is a very sacred time.”

This Rx is ideal if you are just discovering your Goddess within, feel like you have lost your magic, or are reinventing yourself. Personally, the days I skip my morning minutes, I just don’t feel the same. It’s so simple; you are not going to believe the profound difference it will make in your life.
