I’m Going Back to School – I'm getting my Doctorate in Bathing

Do you know that you that you can become a Doctor of bathing? Seriously. How freakin fabulous! I honestly thought I was through with school. After completing my Business degree at UCLA Anderson, I thought nothing would inspire me to pursue my higher education to get a PhD. But that was before I realized you could receive a bonafide Doctorate of Bathing! Now I am ready, set, go back to University.

The actual field of study is known by its smug Latin name, Balneology, however, speaking in regular American: it is the study of bathing as it applies to therapeutic mineral baths. In the United States this science is not very well known, however, throughout Europe and Japan, balneology and hot springs therapy is a part of routine medical care and medical prescriptions are given by licensed doctors!

I discovered the field of Balneology during one of the annual GoddessLife retreats in Greece. There are many mineral hot springs on this special island of Mytilene and these baths were built thousands of years ago within Goddess Temples…the same ones that Aristotle and Sappho soaked in and the authentically Greek Isle locals frequent to this day! Bathing was a sacred activity when you think of the archeological ruins of ancient cultures that remain: Churches, Amphitheaters, Temples and Baths.

I consider bathing sacred, also. And mineral baths and spas have always been a part of my life from my weekly visits as a child to the Moroccan Hammam (spa) to the weekly Goddess Workout classes I taught for years at the exquisite Ocean Spa at Loews Hotel Santa Monica. Unknowingly, I have been preparing for this career my entire life!

I have decided to dedicate myself to this area of study and I will suffer through the treacherous hours of research soaking in all of the mineral baths I can locate. I know it will be grueling and experimental, but after all, I have already completed all the basic studies: I have been wrapped in chocolate in Mexico, had a gin martini facial in Paris, a rose-petal massage in Thailand, Goddess Temple mineral springs in Greece and Lomi Lomi in Hawaii. In conclusion, I have my thesis: Mineral baths are sacred temples to the art of pampering. And all Goddesses should have a PhD in pampering!
